“… in our family, going for a balance was as normal as going to the GP.”
When I was much younger, my mom used to take my brothers and I to a kinesiologist based in Seapoint. I remember being un-phased by these appointments, and quite happily going through a process I didn’t really comprehend at the time. Being a young kid, I didn’t question or investigate kinesiology: in our family, going for a balance was as normal as going to the GP.
As a young adult, my curiosity with kinesiology developed and I began to explore it more deeply. On some level, I was concerned that going back to this practice as a somewhat cynical and critical older person, I would pick it apart and subsequently be disappointed by the results.
I decided the best way to understand kinesiology would be to start afresh. My cynical voice also told me that being treated by someone who didn’t know me from a bar of soap might also be more revealing, which is what lead me to Robyn Lotz.
“Robyn is an unfussy, relaxed and straight-forward woman.”
Robyn is an unfussy, relaxed and straight-forward woman. I felt immediately calm and relaxed in her presence. I told her that I wanted her to treat me as though I knew nothing about the practice of kinesiology or ‘touch for healing’ approach. She was happy to explain everything she did and took the time to make sure I understood the process.
Without any prior knowledge of what I had been tested for before, Robyn quickly confirmed my wheat and lactose intolerance (which to be honest, I was aware of but totally ignoring). She also picked up on generalised digestive issues that were linked to my high levels of stress at the time. To contextualise, I was in the process of planning my wedding, experiencing intense familial discord and had just started a new job. Robyn made use of muscle testing to confirm that I was suffering from adrenal burnout, and recommended specific brain gym exercises and supplements to help get me out of my slump.
“What was surprising was having a complete stranger tapping into deeply suppressed emotions that I thought I was better off ignoring.”
The session, which was an hour long, flew by. Robyn covered all bases, and made apparent certain emotional issues I thought I had buried quite effectively. She quickly picked up on certain themes such as guilt and feelings of inadequacy that have been plaguing me for years. What was surprising was having a complete stranger tapping into deeply suppressed emotions that I thought I was better off ignoring. More strange than that was that I felt a huge release when choosing to let these feelings go.
As Robyn explained, overcoming deeper issues – whether physical, mental or emotional – is a process. Although a balance is a great place to start healing, follow-up is highly advisable, depending of course on the particular issue at hand. Being balanced just before the new year was a fantastic way for me to start off with a sense of having a ‘clean-slate’.
“I had forgotten how to take of myself”
The most important thing I took away from my first balance with Robyn is that I had forgotten how to take of myself. It was a wake-up call and motivation to snap out of auto-pilot and start taking control of my wellbeing. At the end of the day, no one else is going to do that for you except you.
