Tension & Trauma Release Exercise (TRE) is designed to release deep, muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma held in the body. TRE activates our natural reflex system, which sees us shaking or ‘vibrating’ as an in-born method of relieving muscular tension, which is the body’s own way of calming down the nervous system. When the body enters into this state, it is able to heal itself, restoring balance on a physical, emotional, mental and even spiritual level.
TRE is based on the thoroughly researched concept that trauma is experienced by the body both psychologically and physically. Dr David Berceli, who developed TRE, studied groups of African & Middle Eastern communities who had experienced traumatic events in their lives, and found that the shaking/vibrating-state that the body enters into is its natural response to dealing with trauma. This response actually quietens the brain, releases muscular tension and allows the body to recover from and heal chronic stress, tension and trauma.
Those who have experienced TRE report feeling calm, relaxed and a general sense of ‘wellbeing’ after even just once session. It is important to remember, however, that TRE should be practised in a safe, monitored environment with a trained TRE facilitator. It should also be noted that TRE is not recommend as a substitute for trauma counselling, and that any required medical, psychological or psychiatric measures necessary should not be foregone.
